What did we do before the internet?

I had to ask the question.  After all, I can post pics and commentary about our vacation for our friends and family, I can skype friends and relatives from anywhere in the world where there is internet access (like a wi-fi hotspot in a rest area), and I get damn frustrated when the connection goes down.  Just what does that say about me?

After a lovely breakfast - where the two eagles that live in the tree outside our window gave us a spectacular flying exhibition - and saying goodbye to our German and Canadian compatriots here, Lee went to geocache and I went upstairs to work on a few things for my fall classes.  Right in the middle of my work, the internet connection crashed.  That was frustrating.  You'll be happy to hear that I took it in my usual good humor - I went shopping.  For the next two hours.

At 2 pm, Lee and I met up and went to the pier for fish and chips, then back to a couple of shops. Of course, one was a book shop - which was where I had spent one of the hours prior to lunch.  I cannot resist a cute bookstore.  God help me - there are not enough hours in a lifetime to read all the books on my list.  This vacation I've read:  The Gathering, The Short Fiction of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Going After Cacciato, Brave New World, and I bought 2 new books today.  It's the only time of the year when I don't have multiple essays to grade, so this works out nicely.

So, Patty and her husband left today and we are being tended to by Eva.  Eva is from Belgium, but has, I think, lived here a fairly long time.  She's a kick to talk with and very well read.  Her niece and niece's husband and child came in today, so we've met all of them.  They are from Ontario, Canada.  I explained to them about the Ontario where I grew up.  Very nice couple and the son - aged 11 - is a very good developing artist.

We have one more day here in Campbell River, then back to Olympia, Washington on Saturday and home on Sunday.  I leave again in one week - July 26 - for Oxford, England for the AP Conference.  I am most excited about that.  Will blog from there too.  Hopefully you'll come with me again.

My good friend, Mary Lord, has also started a blog about her travels for the summer.  She leaves Monday for Montreal and will keep us up to date.  Her blog is:  http://mairzydoats.blogspot.com

Check it out!

By the way, my daughter says the answer to the question at the end of the first paragraph is:  I'm a nerd (or computer geek)!

Stay well - and cool.
