We started with another wonderful breakfast and enjoyed the company of Clint, Catherine, their son Austin, and Eva (our hostess - who is also the massage therapist here who said she once worked on a cruise ship and was thrown off for indecent exposure: and no, Lee was NOT allowed to go downstairs for a massage). Clint is a regional police officer in Ontario. Don't know what Catherine does - though she is Eva's niece, and Austin is starting the seventh grade and is a terrific budding artist. Unfortunately we did not have the aerial show that the eagles gave yesterday. However, the company and conversation were both excellent so it really didn't matter.
I had a tough time sleeping last night - I think the oysters at dinner last night didn't quite sit right on my delicate stomach. Right. Anyway, I was awake until about 3 am, so I didn't wake up real bright eyed this morning. I'm sure those of you who know me well are shocked and appalled that I might wake up anything other than bubbly and bright! About 10:30 I was showered and ready to go.
We logged on to the different ferry sites: B.C. Ferries, Washington State Ferries, and Black Ball Ferries. Yes, there are three ways to get off this island. We decided we really didn't want to go back through Vancouver - the line going through customs was incredibly long when we came across the border. So that eliminated B.C. Ferries. We looked at the drive if we took Black Ball Ferries to Port Angeles, and decided the trip through Anacortes Island made the most sense. You actually clear customs when you get onboard, so it will save time in the long run. We didn't want another long wait in the car at the border - we can do that in Mexico. We set up our reservations for the ferry tomorrow out of Sydney B.C. to Anacortes. It means leaving here by 6 am, so we won't be having breakfast before we go. Eva offered, but we would both feel too guilty if she got up and made breakfast for us. So we are scouting the closest Starbucks on the way to the harbour. Our travel time is 3.5 hours to get to the ferry landing, then 3 hours on the ferry, then 2.5 to 3 hours to get from Anacortes to Olympia, WA. I think we'll sleep well tomorrow night.
We searched today for souvenirs - didn't find anything we couldn't really find back home unless we wanted to spend massive amounts of money (already have!). We went down to the museum to look around. We took some pictures at one of the beaches where the chainsaw sculptures for this year's judging were still on display. Diane, these are very different from your water colours. By the way, I happen to like the British spellings with -our. Can you tell?
We also decided we are bit tired of fried fish - I need a break from fish and chips (and I'm headed to England?), fried calamari, and fried salmon. Everything has been coated in flour and deep fried. My skin looks like I'm experiencing puberty again. So, today was a Subway day for lunch - and I'm thinking grilled steak for dinner - with lots of veggies. Lee's ready to get back to the barbecue when we get home. Me too - Delene is supposed to go get a couple of racks of ribs for dinner for Monday night.
Summer is coming to an end - Delene and her roommates for the coming school year have an apartment all set, I am working on things for the seniors to do this year, and I have only 12 days at home before school starts. Lee goes back to work on Tuesday - time flies when you're having fun! But it has really been a great summer.
See you all soon.
