2016 - Last trip that has to be in the summer

Well, once again we are traveling and I am documenting said travel.  This year - 2016 - our journey takes us through Boston, Sao Miguel (Azores), Portugal, and Madeira Island.  This is technically day 4, so I should catch everyone up.

We left San Francisco at about 11 pm Sunday night - after watching that disastrous final game - and landed in Boston at 6 am on the 20th.  We were lucky enough that the Copley Square Hotel actually had our room ready and available, and we got checked in and got a couple of hours of sleep.

When we first walked in, the young man behind the desk took one look at Lee’s shirt - Cajun Kitchen, Lompoc, CA - and promptly asked how we knew about the place.  Turns out, he grew up in Lompoc, graduated from Lompoc High School, and still has family there.  Small world.

So, after some sleep, we walked to Boston Commons and got some food. Took pictures, walked to Faneuil Hall (actually looking for the Hard Rock - gotta get my pins), took more pictures, and walked back.  When we got back I remembered what Sean told me about overdoing it with my knee - it hurt.  Oh well, that’s what naproxen sodium is for.  However, the next morning we got checked out, and - while they held our bags - took a “Hop On Hop Off” bus tour of the city.  Took a few pictures - and argued with the guide when he said that MIT was better than Cal Tech.  Hardly. Then, headed to the airport for our flight to Ponta Delgada, Sao Miguel. Another overnight flight.

Four hours and four time zones later, we arrived at Ponta Delgada.  Picked up the rental car, found the hotel, had them hold the luggage, then went off for the five hours we had to wait for our room.  I slept not a minute on the plane, Lee slept a bit, so we were tired. But we went up to Sete Cidades, had some lunch, then made our way back.  Once in the room, I lasted another hour and it was nap time. Got up in time to watch the second half of the Portugal-Hungary game in the UEFA Cup.  Went down to the restaurant and had dinner and watched the first half of the Sweden-Belgium game.  Couldn’t make it past the half.  We were both gone shortly after returning to the room.  We aren’t as young as we used to be.

So, today - after a great night’s sleep - we realized it would be overcast and rainy all day, so we took the car around the eastern half of the island.  This is a beautiful place.  Stopped a couple of times to take pictures.  Fabulous flora and fauna.  Parts of the road were dicey, but we obviously made it back.  The “rest areas” here put ours to shame. The one today had barbecues, room for the kids to play, picnic tables.  Gorgeous.  All in all, a fun day.  Looks to be a great vacation again.

Pictures shortly.
