Coming to an end in Powell River

Today is our last day in Powell River and with the Silvestrini's at Hummingbird B&B.  We've ahad a terrific time here.

So, yesterday was a day to finally hike.  We decided to go on the Blackwater Trail because the description said it had waterfalls all along.  So after a lovely breakfast, we headed up to Duck Lake where the trail is located.  We bypassed the trailhead at first, but found the sign quickly and parked.  The trail is about 3 miles in length with some elevation gain - nothing too strenuous.  Both of us took some pictures of the waterfalls and some very strange looking fungi.  I'll post a picture shortly.  Anyway, when we finished hiking we headed to Willingdon Beach for a picnic, and a hike on the Willingdon Beach trail when lunch was finished.

The trail took us down to the water where the concrete hulks are floating.  These are concrete WWII ships that are now providing a breakwater for the mill.  Lee got some pictures of them  - I never knew they made concrete ships.  Apparently they were quick to make and steel was scarce.  They were used for cargo during the war.  Once steel became more plentiful they were scrapped because they weigh so much more.  Definitely and interesting item.

Once we got back to the B&B and showered, we met a new guest, Cheryl, and Jim and Anita joined the three of us for some beers - and Anita invited all of us for dinner.  She made pasta, garlic bread, a salad and we all had some wine. It was a great evening of conversation  and getting to know another person.  Jim and Anita's son-in-law, Mike, joined us after dinner and we sat around and laughed and had fun.  We've had a most enjoyable stay.

Today is a down time for us - we are off to do laundry, gas up the car, do a little souvenir shopping, etc.  Anita heard me say last night that I really liked eggs benedict, as does Cheryl, so this morning we has lemon/blueberry scones, fresh berries, and eggs benedict.  Delicious.

Friends have e-mailed to let us know that the fire is getting closer into town at home.  Thank you all for keeping us posted on that.  Hope everyone is holding up.
